The aviation medical
Anyone exercising the privileges of a pilot licence, or working as cabin crew, must hold an appropriate medical certificate or report. The framework is set at European level by EASA and implemented in France under the authority of the DGAC.
Class 1 medical certificate
Mainly for professional pilots (CPL, ATPL, MPL). It is the most demanding class. The initial examination is in principle carried out at an aeromedical centre (AeMC); revalidations and renewals may be performed by an AeMC or an authorised AME.
Class 2 medical certificate
Notably for private pilots (PPL, SPL, BPL) and some other licences. It is issued by an aeromedical examiner (AME) or an AeMC.
LAPL medical certificate
For holders of the light aircraft pilot licence (LAPL). Issuing rules are defined in Part-MED; check with the DGAC which practitioners are authorised in France.
Cabin crew medical
Cabin crew undergo a specific aeromedical assessment leading to a medical report or attestation of fitness. It is carried out by an AeMC, an AME or another practitioner authorised under European and national rules.
Validity periods
Validity depends on the class, age and type of operation. It is set by regulation and may change: check the current texts on the EASA website or ask your AME.
