Who carries out aeromedical assessments

Several types of organisations and practitioners are involved in issuing aviation medical certificates. Their approval is granted by the competent authority, which in France is the DGAC.

CEMPN

CEMPN (centres d'expertise médicale du personnel navigant) are long-established aircrew medical centres in France, part of the French Military Health Service. Some are also approved for civil aviation. The up-to-date list of approved centres is published by the authorities.

AeMC

An Aero-Medical Centre (AeMC) is an organisation approved by the competent authority under Part-ORA (AeMC subpart) and Part-MED. It is notably competent for initial class 1 examinations and has technical facilities and a multidisciplinary team.

AME

An Aero-Medical Examiner (AME) is a doctor approved by the authority to perform certain examinations and issue certain certificates, within the scope of their approval.

The authority's role

The competent authority approves centres and examiners, oversees their activity and handles the files referred to it, for example in case of unfitness or a limitation to be assessed.

Within the authority, the medical assessor reviews cases referred by AeMCs and AMEs and takes part in their oversight.
